Life of the Buddha in Gandhara Art is written by Ven. Weragoda Sarada Maha Thero. Many streams of Buddhist art and sculpture have their origins in the Gandhara Art tradition. Historically, the Buddha was first depicted as a person in the Gandhara tradition which is now part of Pakistan.
Prior to this, the Enlightened Buddha was depicted in art and sculpture as a stylized Bodhi Tree or as footprints. The inspiration for personal portrayals of the Buddha was most likely drawn from the Hellenistic tradition. The Buddha's life is shown in detail in a number of bas-reliefs and friezes.
